Occupy Gezi / Istanbul Protests

For the past few days, peaceful Turkish citizens have been protesting the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park, one of the few green areas left in the center of Istanbul. The plan by the Erdogan-run AKP government is to build a large shopping center instead, benefitting his own interests and filling his own pockets.

What started with a mere 100 protestors turned into tens of thousands over the course of a few days. People camped out in the park, sang songs, read books, danced. I was there yesterday and it was heartwarming.

Prime Minister Erdogan made a public announcement two days ago stating, 'We have made up our minds', and that nothing will stop his plans to destroy the park.

He subsequently ordered his police forces to attack protestors in the park using water cannons and tear gas without warning in the early hours of the morning. This has been happening for the past two days, and continues as I write these words. Tents were burned, innocent citizens were dragged away and people had tear gas sprayed directly into their faces.

Innocent people are being attacked, injured and hospitalized. There are unofficial reports of one person being dead with his ID confiscated by officials (an eerie replay of the May 1 attacks when an innocent young girl was put into a coma due to tear gas attacks. This girl was later labeled by the government as a terrorist)

This has become a matter about more than just saving trees. This is an 'I can do whatever I damn well want', fascist mentality that not only supresses but attacks its own people.

To make matters worse, media channels are being censored so as not to display the news.

#direngeziparki is now the 2nd worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

As our friends overseas, we need your help. Send this message to everyone you know. Create awareness internationally about our plight, or matters are going to get much, much worse. We want all international media channels - soclal and mass - to report this news.

Please help us to share this message and stop Erdogan's ruthless, inhumane acts.

USA vs. Belgium

Team USA and Belgium look to build momentum ahead of a string of World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.

USA will face Belgium and Germany before clashing with Jamaica, Panama and Honduras in World Cup qualifying. Belgium battles Serbia in June after its match with USA.

Several players will be held out for both sides due to rest and injury, but some formidable athletes will still be out on the pitch in Cleveland.

Let's take a look at the broadcasting schedule for Wednesday, complete with players to watch.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings: Let's Play Game 7, Boys

The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings have battled to a stalemate in their Western Conference Semifinal. Game 7 and the right to advance against Los Angeles awaits both teams at the United Center.

Let's get to it, already.

Through six games, the Hawks and Wings have thrown their best punches at each other. Each team has been handed a defeat at home, and both goalies have risen to the occasion several times.

If these division rivals weren't familiar with each other in their four regular-season matches, they sure as heck are at this point. Heading into the final meeting before the two Original Six franchises become a pair of trains passing in the night of realignment, we should have a good idea what to expect.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has the last line change. Count on Quenneville to take full advantage and keep his captain, Jonathan Toews, away from Henrik Zetterberg.

Look for Detroit to try and take the crowd out of it with an early goal. This will also allow the Red Wings to sit back and prevent the 'Hawks from easy trips through the neutral zone.

Both teams have tried to throw off the opposition with physical play. Toews can't skate 10 feet without taking a stick to his shin guards or a bump from one of his Detroit counterparts.

England vs. Ireland:

It's hard to believe that tonight's clash at Wembley is the first match between England and Ireland in 18 years. The last, in Dublin in 1995, was abandoned due to riots - expect tonight's encounter to celebrate the FA's 150th anniversary to be considerably more friendly. England are missing a host of players through injury (including Steven Gerrard, Jack Wilshere and Andy Carroll) so Ashley Cole has been named as captain despite vocally criticising the FA in the past. Roy Hodgson will likely turn to Liverpool's rejuvenated Daniel Sturridge alongside Wayne Rooney up front. Ireland are not short of goalscoring options either, with Robbie Keane and West Brom's Shane Long both fit and Aiden McGeady in midfield. Both sides are looking for a win, but frankly getting to the final whistle will be an improvement.

England vs Ireland is on tonight at 7.45pm on ITV.

Deutschland gegen Ecuador

Bayern Munich gegen Borussia Dortmund

At the beginning of Champions League Round of 16, no one would have expected this year's final to be the first all-German showdown. The two rivals, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, edged past the Spanish giants in their respective semi-finals to set up the fourth UEFA Champions League final between teams from the same country.

While Germany's most prestigious club, Bayern Munich, was one the favorites to make the final this year, their arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund - who were tagged as underdogs in the tournament - have surprised everyone with their ferocious skills and talent.

Bayern Munich, valued at $1,309 million, are up against a team that is valued at a mere $456 million - a fact that has attracted a lot of support for Borussia Dortmund and irks the football big shots. The darlings of soccer nerds and people who dislike rich clubs, BVB have transformed themselves into giant killers from being just the underdogs.

The yellow German powerhouse faced their biggest test in the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid - one of the most successful clubs in the tournament's history. But, to everyone's surprise, BVB stunned the Spanish giants 3-2 on aggregate to make the tournament final.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich were able to dictate their terms against Barcelona during their semi-finals tie. Jupp Heynckes' men annihilated the Spanish superstars 7-0 on aggregate to announce their arrival at the tournament final.

After dominating the German Bundesliga for two years in a row, Jurgen Klopp's men lost the title to their arch-rivals Bayern Munich this season - a fact that makes this year's Champions League final more exciting.

While Bayern Munich have reportedly planned their Champions League victory party in advance - after booking the Great Room in the Grosvenor House Hotel with a buffet for 1,800 people and a bar extension to 5am, their track record in the tournament final speaks otherwise.

The Bavarians have reached ten European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals and have lost six of them with their most recent heartbreak against Chelsea last season. The last time Bayern won the title was back in 2001 against Valencia with 5-4 victory on penalties.

The Champions League final this year will be more than just about the silverware between these two wherein Borussia Dortmund will be looking to avenge their Bundesliga title defeat against Bayern Munich - who will be eyeing their fifth tournament title this season.

Star players from Borussia Dortmund:

Robert Lewandowski: The 24-year-old Polish footballer has been the livewire for Jurgen Klopp's squad out upfront. With 10 sensational goals for Dortmund, the hot-shot striker is the second top goal-scorer after Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League this season. Lewangoalski also became the first player to score four goals in a Champions League semifinal during Dortmund's 4-1 win over Real Madrid 4-1 in the first leg. He is also the top goal-scorer in the Bundesliga this year with 25 goals for Dortmund.

Marco Reus: The 23-year-old German winger is known for his versatility, speed and technique. The 2012 Footballer of the Year in Germany has scored four goals for Dortmund in the Champions League this season. He instigated numerous Dortmund moves against Real Madrid in the semi-finals to sink the Spanish giants. Dortmund's young gun has also scored 14 goals for his side in the Bundesliga this year.

Star players from Bayern Munich:

Thomas Muller: The 23-year-old German star has been a goal-machine for Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season. With 8 goals to his name, Muller is placed third top goal-scorer right behind Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski in the Champions League this season. The winger has also scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga this season for Bayern.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: The 28-year-old German footballer is the key to Bayern Munich's midfield play. His capability to play out wide or in a more central role makes him an ideal player to have in your team. His backheel flick goal against Eintracht Frankfurt on April 6, 2013 sealed the Bundesliga title for Bayern Munich. Schweini scored a total of seven goals for Bayern in the Bundesliga this season.
Probable Line-up(from):

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba, Javi Martinez, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Muller, Ribery, Mandzukic.

Borussia Dortmund: Weidenfeller, Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer, Bender, Gundogan, Grosskreutz, Blaszczykowski, Reus, Lewandowski.
Did You Know:

- Germany would become fourth country to have both its clubs featuring in the finals (Borussia Dortmund-Bayern Munich in 2013), after Spain (Real Madrid-Valencia CF in 2000), Italy (Milan-Juventus in 2003) and England (Manchester United FC-Chelsea FC in 2008).

- Borussia Dortmund were the first German club to win a European title when they won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1966.

- Bayern Munich have won four and lost three of seven UEFA competition ties against German rivals.

- Bayern Munich's victory would make Heynckes the 19th coach to have won the European Cup twice, following his 1998 success with Real Madrid.

- Bayern Munich's 2-5 loss against Borussia Dortmund in the 2012 DFB-Pokal final was their worst ever loss in a final.

- The rivalry between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich reached to a new height when Dortmund edged past Bayern on a 1-0 aggregate in the 1998 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

- In 2002, manager Matthias Sammer became the first person in Borussia Dortmund history to win the Bundesliga as a player and manager with their third Bundesliga title.

- Borussia Dortmund are one of four German clubs to win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double along with Bayern Munich, 1. FC Koln, and Werder Bremen.

- Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich were carded a record of 15 times in a match played on 7 April 2001.

- Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski became the first player to score four goals in a Champions League semifinal where Dortmund thrashed Real Madrid 4-1 in the first leg.

West Ham agree a fee of £15m for Liverpool striker Andy Carroll

Liverpool have accepted a £15m offer from West Ham United for Andy Carroll, a £20m loss on their record signing in 28 months, but face a struggle to convince the striker to sever his Anfield ties for Upton Park.

Carroll enjoyed an impressive yet injury-hit season on loan with Sam Allardyce's team, who have moved quickly to secure the 24-year-old on a long-term basis following their final Premier League game. West Ham are prepared to pay a club-record transfer fee to sign the striker around whom Allardyce intends to build his team, while Liverpool want to sell Carroll to generate extra transfer funds for Brendan Rodgers.
The Liverpool manager, who admits he is braced for bids for Luis Suárez this summer, has lined up Kolo Touré on a free transfer from Manchester City and has made a £12m offer for the Schalke central defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

Liverpool wanted a £17m fee written into Carroll's loan deal when he reluctantly moved to east London last August. That was dropped to enable the move to proceed ahead of the transfer deadline, with West Ham paying a £2m loan arrangement fee and the striker's £80,000-a-week wages. The agreed deal is a huge reduction on the £35m Newcastle United received from Liverpool in January 2011 but underlines the Anfield club's determination to offload Carroll and reinvest quickly.
Rodgers told the striker upon his arrival as Liverpool manager last summer that his first-team chances would be severely restricted and that stance has not altered. Carroll, however, is not sold on the idea of a transfer to West Ham, despite tweeting after the final game against Reading on Sunday that he had "enjoyed every minute" of his time with the club.

Rodgers and Allardyce have to persuade the striker that West Ham is in his best interests again, as they did last summer, but Carroll has so far given no indication he wants to leave Liverpool.
The England international, who was recalled by Roy Hodgson for the forthcoming friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil but may miss out with a heel problem, has taken encouragement from how Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing revived their Anfield careers having been dismissed as expensive mistakes.

Carroll believes he can follow suit and would also consider a return to Newcastle United but West Ham, who are expected to part company with Carlton Cole, are the only club to submit an offer so far.
Rodgers is ready to sell Carroll despite the uncertainty surrounding Suárez's future at Anfield. The Liverpool manager was unable to provide assurances that the Uruguay international would stay in the aftermath ofhis 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic last month, when a despairing Suárez was considering his future in English football.

Rodgers has been encouraged by the player's demeanour since his return from a short holiday but accepts offers for Liverpool's leading goalscorer are inevitable this summer.
"I don't have any doubts about that because he's up there," the Anfield manager admitted. "There's a small percentage of players who are world-class and he's in that bracket so I don't think it will be too dissimilar to when I first came in last summer. People will want to take him. But he was committed to wanting to stay and work with the club. I think he's very happy here.
"Obviously he had a circumstance which made it extremely difficult for him but I've seen nothing to make me think otherwise. I've been in contact with his agent and I think he needs to go away, play in the Confederations Cup, have a period of reflection and come back raring to go to help us have a good season."
Rodgers believes Suárez's disillusionment with English football has lessened in the four weeks since his ban. "There was that initial period of shock and anger but a wee bit of reality has set in now," he said. "He knows he did wrong. Apart from those first few days when I gave him a period away, he's come back and he's got on with it."

The Liverpool manager also hopes the club's firm support for Suárez during another controversy will be repaid by the striker this summer. Rodgers added: "We as a club and I as a manager have supported him, told him when he's been right and when he's been wrong. The supporters show their passion for him relentlessly so as a club I don't think we can do any more.
"We have supported him when he's been in turmoil and when he's had setbacks, when there's been traumas over the last couple of years. As a club we're doing everything to keep him and all the players content, and in the main I think they are."

Syria and Israel in exchange of fire

Israeli and Syrian forces have exchanged fire across the ceasefire line in the occupied Golan Heights.

Israel returned fire after one of its military vehicles was hit by shots from Syria, Israel's defence forces say. Media reports say no-one was hurt.

Syria says it destroyed an Israeli vehicle which it says crossed the ceasefire line into territory its forces control.

Syria and Israel have traded fire a number of times in recent weeks.

The Israeli military said its troops "returned precise fire" after the vehicle was hit.

It warned that any attempts to violate its sovereignty would be "met with immediate and firm retaliation".A statement from the Syrian army said it had "destroyed an Israeli vehicle with everything that it had in it". The statement said the vehicle was shot after it crossed the ceasefire line and headed towards the rebel-held village of Bir Ajam.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has previously accused Israel of aiding the rebels, but has not provided substantive evidence.

Speaking after Tuesday's incident, Israeli chief of staff Lt Gen Benny Gantz said Israel would not allow the Golan to become "a comfortable sphere for Assad to operate from", warning the Syrian leader would "bear the consequences" if the situation deteriorated.
